My partner sent me this image. And in turn i sent it to Adrian. And then in realised there’s something deeper about this cartoon i’d like to share with you too. Everything is content!
When Emma was born, it became clear that i was no longer going to be able to see the world through my eyes alone. My job was to see through her eyes too. As a strategist, my job is to represent the voice of the customer in any given situation. That skill translates to parenting too, if you replace customer with 'child'.
(The other skill we get trained for is to look for metaphors everywhere, so if the above doesn't hold up, blame the job.)
My role is to have as much empathy as possible by interpreting a situation like Emma might. Especially given she has such a young brain that is always developing. This gives me consolation, and patience. It helps me interpret whatever she's doing not as an annoyance (though no one's perfect!), but as her doing her best.
So, on the topic of Nathan Pyle's work being a stab at reframing what's normal, i wanted to write a short piece. Three short reflections on the importance of seeing with fresh eyes.
